Digital Awards Categories Reflect Changing Publishing Landscape

Digital-first publishing and video storytelling will be recognized as part of the MMPA Awards for the first time

The 2017 MMPA Excellence Awards scheduled in November will recognize several new digital publishing categories thanks to the work of the new Digital Lab committee. And there should be plenty of interest, particularly in a couple of areas.

Overall Excellence: Digital-First Publisher

If presentations at the recent MMPA Summit are any indicator, the work being done by many of Minnesota’s digital-first publishers is indeed recognition worthy. Over 60 attendees heard the start-up stories behind,, and Later, there were presentations by,, and

All of these publishers talked about how they are meeting their audience development and business model objectives. While every story was unique, their fundamental points-of-focus were familiar topics for longstanding MMPA publishers. Which digital natives are doing the best job providing authoritative content across website, email and social media channels? We’ll see in November.

Video Storytelling

Publishers are posting more video content on their websites and social media channels than ever before, and it doesn’t look like there will a slowdown anytime soon.

Check out Mpls.St.Paul Magazine’s video series called My North – 52 Minnesota Stories. It’s made up of brief testimonials or “love letters” about life in Minnesota from local artists, athletes, authors and entertainers. As a joint project with Explore Minnesota, the series is part of a run-up to Minnesota’s hosting of the 2018 Super Bowl.

Or, check out some of the woodworking projects featured on the Woodworkers Guild of America website or its Facebook page, where longtime woodworking editor George Vondriska provides tips, techniques and how-to content for his audience.

We see new video storytelling examples every day. The quality of our local publishers’ work in video is fantastic, and we plan to celebrate it.
