A closer look: The inspiration behind the winning People’s Choice cover

By Andrew Lovgren, CSC Publishing

The spring 2016 cover of Next, published by the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), instantly captured attendees’ attention at this year’s MMPA Excellence Awards, earning the People’s Choice cover award.

“We were inspired by another art and design college’s magazine cover that had a simple design: a strong piece of art coupled with the name of the magazine,” says Ann Benrud, editor of Next. “We wanted a cover that would pack the same kind of punch and also feature work by a talented alum. The holographic gold foil added an extra, unique touch.”

Entitled “Everything is Temporary” the art was created by ’14 MCAD alum Bobby Rogers, who was also profiled in the issue’s coverage of the effectiveness of scholarships.

“As a traditionally trained illustrator and self-taught photographer,” Benrud notes, “he [Rogers] creates intensely expressive, celestial and emotive work, exploring technical extremes to exhibit a blend reminiscent of nostalgia, euphoria, passion and elegance.”

This was the first time the magazine featured either alumni or student work on the cover—a trend Benrud hopes to continue. “One of the pillars of MCAD is ‘students first,’ so we wanted to feature the work of a former student on one of our most prominent showcases: the cover of the annual alumni and friends magazine,” she says. “This beautiful, abstract piece represents the stellar work of all of MCAD’s talented students and alumni.”
