Mingle 2012: Matchmaker, Matchmaker
January 25 event plans many introductions.
Networking. We all realize we need to do it; yet for many professionals the prospect of walking into a room filled with unfamiliar faces gives us cold feet.
The Minnesota Magazine Mingle was revamped in 2011 to provide a stronger platform for publishers, writers and editors to interact, and the 2012 version continues to evolve, according to organizers.
This year’s version of the event will employ designated matchmakers to help make introductions and bring writers together with editors and publishers.
“Because connecting people is a goal of the event, the committee was inspired to ask publishing veterans to be matchmakers and introduce writers to other publishing professionals,” said Susan Niemi, event chair.
As in years past, copies and covers from Minnesota magazines of all persuasions will be available to peruse, celebrating the diversity and vitality of publishing in the state. Additionally, writers attending the event are invited to submit their résumés (attach to email addressed to JElhard@nonprofitsolutions.com), which will be circulated to editors and publishers in attendance. Editors and publishers will also have the chance to introduce their publications to the group with a brief description of each.
Organizers of the event also remind you to bring along plenty of business cards—not just for the obvious networking exchange—as prizes and drawings will punctuate the festivities. Light refreshments, a cash bar and great conversation round out the evening.
The Mingle begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Loft on Washington Avenue in Minneapolis. Free parking is available that night around the corner to the west, at Periscope. The annual event is sponsored by the Loft and Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association. Reduced rates for members of MMPA, the Loft, ASJA, NWU and PEN.
